IDIS China Program is pleased to invite you to a lecture titled: What Greeks think about China – and Why, by Prof. Peter Gries, Lee Kai Hung Chair and Director of the Manchester China Institute and Professor of Chinese Politics at the University of Manchester.

About the lecture:

What do Greeks feel and think about China? And what are the primary drivers of their views? Based on an Autumn 2022 national representative Internet survey of Greek adults, this talk will first describe how the average Greek felt about China, focusing on placing their views in broader comparative perspective. The second half of the talk will turn to the drivers of Greek views of China. Although Greeks do not report being very knowledgeable about China, there are effects of preexisting Greek identities and ideologies on China attitudes—although these effects are small compared to their impact on attitudes towards countries like Turkey and Russia. Future research directions will also be discussed.

About the speaker:

Peter Gries is the Lee Kai Hung Chair and founding Director of the Manchester China Institute at the University of Manchester, where he is also Professor of Chinese politics. A political psychologist, he studies how our identities and ideologies shape international affairs, with a focus on China, the United States, and Europe. He is also currently studying the Greek language and Greece’s politics and history.

Participants by physical attendance are entitled to a Certificate.
