Since the summer of 1992, IDIS has hosted the annual Thucydides Summer Seminar. The seminar pursues a threefold mission:
- To invite distinguished contributors to global knowledge production to Greece, thereby supporting the internationalization of the Greek research community and the advancement of International Relations as a field in the country.
- To create opportunities for the development of international research collaborations and networks.
- To provide a platform for the professional socialization of early-career researchers.
During its first six years, the seminar was held on the island of Corfu. In 1998, it moved to Hydra, and more recently to Tinos, hosted by the Foundation of Tinian Culture, and Nafplio.
Over the decades, the Thucydides Summer Seminar has trained hundreds of students from more than twenty countries, playing an active role in shaping an international research community.
By bearing the name of Thucydides and taking place in Greece—the birthplace of the great thinker—the seminar seeks to bridge the timeless wisdom of classical thought with the contemporary challenges of international relations.
